New Design Unveiled/ Construction Managers Named
Kindred Construction named as construction managers of new John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse. This rendering by the architect demonstrates that the new floating facility is going to be spectacular in form as it will be in fulfilling the much needed and long-overdue function, of providing UBC, St. George’s and community rowers with a place to train.

Signs, Signs, Everywhere There Are Signs… That We Are Sprinting to the Finish
UBC Women WIN!!!!

Our illustrious UBC women rowed their way into history this fall, winning their first ever Canadian University Rowing Championships and in the process becoming the first crew to beat UVic since the regattas inception in 1996.

UBC handed UVic their first loss in the 8+  on Canadian water in over 15 years.

In the points tally the women won two gold, two silver, and two bronze medals and were the only team to medal in every race.

Feeling Blue – Longing For Gold? Missing the Old Shell?Hop In and Help Us Fill It Up
We are so close, the run of the shell is great, we can see our Spring 2005 finish line it’s time for a final Big Ten. We all know it is about completing not just competing and how important that final leg of the journey is in sports, construction and life in general. This is our home stretch and we need your help to reach our goal of $4.5 million. We urge you to make a donation and assist with fundraising. We need help in ensuring that each alumni rower is personally contacted. If you would like to assist, please contact: Steve Tuckwood at 604 822-1972 or email stevet@exchange.ubc.ca

It’s All in The Name

As we mentioned in our last newsletter, naming opportunities have been established as a means of recognizing the invaluable contributions of some of our donors.

We are pleased to inform you that the decades of the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s are each $100,000 on their ways towards raising the $250,000 needed for their boat bays  thanks to the efforts of their crew captains, Glen Smith and Bob Falconer (50’s), Phil Webber, John Cartmel, Roy McIntosh and Rod Hoffmeister (60’s) and Dave Wilkinson, John Gjervan and Peter Jackson (70’s).

Not to be left behind, the 1980’s and 90’s have joined efforts and eras under the impressive leadership of era captains Kathleen Heddle, Rosy Lecky, Jane Hungerford Christine McDermott and Jonathan Fane.

We are currently at $3.5 million or 80 per cent of our goal and we know that these numbers are climbing daily. As John Richardson says, “When you actually see the Boathouse you will want to be able to say that you had a hand in its creation.”

George and Jane Hungerford Honoured with SFU Community Leadership Award

On November 18, George and Jane Hungerford were honoured for their many years of tireless commitment to community causes and advocacy with the Simon Fraser University 2004 Distinguished Community Leadership Award.

George, the Chair of the UBC Gold for Life Executive Committee, is an Olympic champion rower, is the founding director of the Olympic Club of Canada, a current honorary member of the Canadian Olympic Committee and director of the successful 2010 Olympic Bid Corporation. Jane, who is vice-chair of fundraising with Gold for Life, has received the Volunteer Vancouver leadership award and a Junior League of Vancouver award. George was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1984 and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1991.

Commented, SFU president, Michael Stevenson, "The Hungerfords' passion and dedication to a wide variety of causes is extraordinary, and their contributions are a testament to their generosity and leadership. SFU is proud to bestow this honour upon them."

The couple's lifelong involvement in community service has been more than participatory and philanthropic. Both have helped to guide community organizations and projects during periods of change, growth and development. Their dedication has been felt in community causes from health care and social services, to education and the environment, as well as athletics.

They have made major contributions to the fight against cancer. Jane has been chair of the B.C. Cancer Foundation and a board member of the B.C. Cancer Agency, while George has been chair of the major gifts committee, helping to raise more than $120 million to construct the new B.C. Cancer Research Centre and create the Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre.

The pair was also involved in the establishment of Science World -- Jane serving on the initial board and George co-chairing the capital campaign.

George, a partner in the law firm Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, serves as chair of the Greater Vancouver Salvation Army advisory board. Jane is a past volunteer with the annual Red Shield fundraising appeal. She is currently chair of the UBC Alumni Association and has served as a member of the board of governors at Crofton House School as well as director of the school's foundation and alumnae association.

The community leaders were recipients of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal.

We are grateful they have found the time in their busy lives to provide us their leadership, talents, experience and commitment. Join us in sending our heartfelt congratulations to two people who serve as inspiration for all of us.
